Innovations support new opportunities for livestock producers and industry
Manila, PHILIPPINES— A new suite of feed technology innovations is set to open new horizons of opportunity for livestock producers and their industries across the Asia Pacific region.
Canadian Bio-Systems Inc. (CBS Inc.) has announced the expanded availability of its new Feed Science Platforms (FSPs) for the region, offering a range of advantages to support more efficient, profitable and sustainable livestock production.
The company has also bolstered its CBS Asia Pacific team, headquartered in Manila, Philippines, highlighted by the addition of animal nutrition consultant Ms. Juvy Castillo. Both developments were showcased at the 32st Philippines Society of Animal Nutritionists (PHILSAN) conference, Oct. 3, 2019.
Driving new advances
“Livestock production across the Asia Pacific is poised for a new era of advancement based on improved science and tools,” says Eduardo Tuason, Global Sales Manager – Asia Pacific, with CBS Inc. “Innovations in feed technology represent one of the greatest opportunities. With the current and continuous development of our product distribution in the region, we are excited to expand the availability of our Feed Science Platforms to help drive continued progress. We are also pleased to welcome Juvy as a key part of our team, to support nutritionists, farmers and industry to help the Asia Pacific capture its full potential.”
Along with strong technical expertise, Juvy, who is also an active member of PHILSAN since 2002, brings a wealth of local knowledge and experience to the position, including roots in local agriculture and the feed industry that run deep. She grew up in Victoria, Laguna in the Philippines, a small town where, she says, “there are more ducks than people” (the area is a prime location for raising layers to produce balut – the country’s famous fertilized duck egg delicacy).
Championing local agriculture
Her father was an agronomist and the family owned the local feed store, where Castillo worked on weekends beginning in the fifth grade through high school. She went on to earn a B.Sc. degree from the University of the Philippines with a major in animal science specializing in poultry nutrition, and has invested over 20 years working in feed and nutrition before joining CBS Inc.
“I’m proud to join the team at CBS Asia Pacific,” says Ms. Castsillo. “For as long as I can remember I have always enjoyed working in agriculture and supporting local operations. I am a strong believer in the opportunity for science-based solutions to empower Asia Pacific farmers and their industries with new options to improve results and build a strong future. I look forward to working with the growing CBS Inc. team, customers, partners and network in this new position.”
New generation of progress
These new developments signal a new chapter for CBS Inc. in its dedication to championing livestock production advancement in the Asia Pacific, including for poultry, swine, ruminant and aquaculture applications. The company, which is celebrating 35 years in the feed science technology business, has made a strong push across the region over the past decade including establishing its Manila-based Asia Pacific headquarters six years ago.
The CBS Inc. Asia Pacific approach has focused on bio-based feed technology innovations that help customers capture more value from feed through better utilization of energy and nutrients. This leads to corresponding improvements in animal performance and health while reducing potential waste and environmental impacts – advantages critical to livestock industry expansion in the region.
Tackling key challenges
Compared to western countries, key production areas of the Asia Pacific have faced greater challenges in terms of the feed options available, with limited choices, lack of consistency in feed sources, cost barriers and other obstacles. But as the industry has matured and becomes more globally connected, innovations in feed technology, such as Multi-Carbohydrase enzymes, advanced nucleotide formulations and ground-breaking yeast bioactives additives are helping to level the playing field. They also provide more “tools in the toolbox” to allow for cost effective improved strategies tailored specifically to each operation.
CBS Inc. technologies as showcased within the new FSPs framework offer a comprehensive range of tools to benefit swine poultry, aquaculture and ruminant production, with five platforms including of Multi-Carbohydrase enzyme technology, enhanced yeast technology, grain management technology, functional fatty acids, and phytogenetics and probiotics. The FSPs are backed by a process to determine “What’s your FSP fingerprint?” – a new approach to advanced precision livestock feeding that helps individual operations identify how they can best integrate and capture synergies among the different types of feed technology.
Science-backed solutions
“The FSPs are based on a strong foundation of science and represent the latest in feed technology innovation for the Asia Pacific,” says Ms. Castillo, who will work across the region including with a major initial focus on the Philippines. “I am excited to share knowledge of these technologies across the industry – helping to meet the challenges of today as well as capture the opportunities of tomorrow.”
